刺子さし -こ【刺(し)子】 SASHI KO
補強や装飾のため、 布地に別糸で刺し縫いをしたものを
「刺し子」と呼びます。 遠州 (浜松) 木綿を使った刺し子織は、
生地に三次元を感じさせる凹凸が生まれ、
耐久性や保湿性、吸湿性に優れているのが特徴。
耐火性にもすぐれていることから、
江戸時代には火消しの衣装にも使用されていました。
Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique
that decorates fabric with intricate patterns while also
making it more durable.
Because of its excellent fire resistance,
it was also used for firefighting uniforms during
the Edo period.

日本の刺繍の産地である桐生地方で丁寧に作られる。
